A man and a woman were fatally stabbed Thursday in Bethpage, according to police.
Detectives say police responded at 9:11 a.m. to A & A Italian Deli on Hicksville Road where they found two people unresponsive with stab wounds.
A 62-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 70-year-old man was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Police have not identified the victims but say the couple owned the store.
A customer who spoke to News 12 says they were inside the store at the time.
"I just saw the son walking out, and he said 'I just stabbed my parents' and that was it," says customer Joe Boros.
Customers are devastated.
"I've been coming here 12 years since I moved into the neighborhood, and they are by far the sweetest people you had ever met," says customer Dan Harper.
"Terrible thing to hear just in general. Very surprised. I'd never expect that," says customer Chris Timlin. "Very sweet, very nice couple. Many friends who live in the neighborhood have gone there to get pizza."
“They’re hardworking people. A staple in this neighborhood for so long it’s crazy to believe they’re not here anymore," says customer Diane Elder.
Community members say the impact the owners made extended beyond the doors to their deli.
They donated pizzas to blood drives and sponsored Little League teams.
“I’m just a little spoke in the wheel here,” said Kevin Kelly. “There are so many people that as the days go on, they’ll be lots of stories that can be told about this couple.”
Police say they arrested a 30-year-old male suspect without incident on Thursday.
They have not said if there is a possible motive.
