The Trump administration has ordered a halt to New York City's congestion pricing system.
Businesses and officials say this could be a game changer for them.
In a statement, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced the federal government has rescinded its approval of the program.
Duffy said his agency will work with the state on an “orderly termination of the tolls.
The decision to halt congestion pricing in New York City is prompting a lot of local reactions.
“I’m a parent so I have extra expenses with childcare and that would mean a lot to me,” says Alyssa Guzman, a parent and commuter.
“I usually drive to the city because I have to take two trains to get to where I got to go,” says Sharnatte Tucker, a Yonkers resident and commuter.
Hudson Valley officials are also reacting to this announcement.
“This is going to be a homerun for everybody. The bottom line is people who go to work in the city should not be penalized for simply going to work,” says Rockland County Executive Ed Day.
“The residents that I’ve spoken with want to see this go away,” says Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne.
Artuso's Pastry Shop, located in the Bronx, ships from Mount Vernon. It ships many of its products to Manhattan daily.
It has been facing challenges with both delivery drivers and customers ever since congestion pricing went into effect. But now, they say this halt could make a major difference.
"We've had deliveries canceled because the drivers won't go below 60th Street, whatever the dividing line is, the boundary and it affects us," says Anthony Artuso, president of Artuso Pastry Shop. “That’s an add on. So, they have to pay a premium on top of the price for the product and the delivery”
The MTA has filed papers in federal court to keep the program alive.
“It’s mystifying that after four years and 4,000 pages of federally-supervised environmental review – and barely three months after giving final approval to the Congestion Relief Program – USDOT would seek to totally reverse course," says MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber.
