Police are searching for a suspect after a man was found dead inside a Longwood apartment building Tuesday afternoon in what investigators are now treating as a homicide.
The discovery was made at 1006 Longfellow Ave., where neighbors say they had been complaining about a strong odor coming from an apartment for days.
"I thought it was a leak or whatever," said one neighbor, who believed the smell was coming from the building's basement.
The landlord told News 12 that workers were renovating units Tuesday when one employee went to investigate the source of the odor, which had reportedly grown stronger over time. The worker then discovered the victim inside the apartment.
"He was discovered with a knife in his chest, I believe" the landlord said.
Police quickly secured the scene, closing off part of the block as detectives and members of the Office of Chief Medical Examiner entered the building to investigate.
The landlord said the victim, believed to be in his 60s, had been living in the apartment with another man through a supportive housing program. He says he believes the roommate is responsible for his death.
The landlord says the roommate was not at the apartment when emergency responders arrived but had been living with the body for days.
Authorities have not yet publicly identified the victim or released details about a possible suspect. The investigation remains ongoing.
