James Rich, of Newburgh, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for killing his 76-year-old roommate, George Harding, with a broomstick.

According to the Orange County District Attorney's Office, Rich was convicted of second-degree murder.

Police initially arrested Rich in March 2023 at the Varick Homes Complex for possessing cocaine. After his release, Rich returned to the apartment and fatally attacked Harding.

Rich was arrested three days later after police found him hiding in a different apartment with Harding's cellphone.
