Josephine Spano, the revered matriarch of a prominent Yonkers political family, has died at the age of 89.
Mayor Mike Spano announced the death of his mother via his Facebook page.
In his heartfelt post, the mayor described his mother as the epitome of strength, emphasizing her unwavering love and support for each of her 16 children, making them feel valued and cherished. He expressed their collective desire to make her proud.
"She inspired us. She educated us. She dedicated her life to us. For that, we are eternally grateful. She was the matriarch of our family, placing her foundation in faith. St. Gerard, the patron saint of childbirth, was whom she turned to for prayer."
Among her children is also former Sen. Nicholas Spano. Mrs. Spano was the wife of Leonard Spano, a former county clerk and long-time county legislator, who died in 2019 at the age of 88. The couple had been married for 66 years.
