And despite all the talk that the Emmys were in the midst of a sea-change, the prevailing winds blew with the comfortable favorites.

The big winners this year are "Modern Family" and "Breaking Bad" - both beating off challenges by upstart online series like "Orange Is the New Black" and "House of Cards."

ABC's Modern Family captured the honors for best comedy series and "Breaking Bad" picked up best drama - along with awards for three of its stars.

The Modern Family win is its fifth straight victory in the best comedy category. That ties it with "Frasier" for the most consecutive wins.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus won best actress in a comedy series for her role in HBO's political comedy "Veep." And Jim Parsons, who plays the lovable geek on "The Big Bang Theory," won his fourth Emmy Award for best actor in a comedy series.
Meanwhile, Billy Crystal paid tribute to his great friend and comedy brother Robin Williams, who was found dead in his Northern California home on Aug. 11.
Following the Emmys' in memoriam segment Monday night, Crystal appeared on stage at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre, remembering Williams as "the greatest friend you could ever imagine."
