Students at Monroe University in New Rochelle prepared meals for the hungry on Friday to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Volunteer New York Community Engagement manager N'Diera Viechweg said the students chose service over sleep on their day off from classes.

"We're here at Monroe University to pack over 50,000 meals in collaboration with Pack Shack, Monroe and Volunteer New York. All the meals will be picked up by Feeding Westchester," Viechweg said.

Deputy Westchester County Executive Richard Wishnie said the day of service honored the lives lost on 9-11 and helped fight food insecurity in Westchester.

"Food insecurity is a long-term problem in Westchester County and it's wonderful that today, we're remembering, for the 15th year in a row, those of the folks we lost on 9-11," Wishnie said.

Student Faquir Mosley said he wasn't even alive when the Sept. 11 terror attacks happened.

"No," Mosley said. "My mom told me many stories about it, she told me how it affected the world."

Alive or not when it happened, students like Samjela Lesiga said Sept. 11 should never be forgotten.

"It should be a day to be remembered because it was a day of loss, but also it's something we always have to keep in the back of our heads to make sure that never happens again," Lesiga said.

Volunteer New York is also hosting events on the anniversary itself.
