Enrollment was down at the Laurel Plains Elementary School in New City Friday after the building was evacuated Thursday following complaints by students and teachers of foul odors that were causing headaches, dizziness and nausea.

School officials say that the district has been investigating the smell for the past week, and that all sewer systems have been power washed and smoke tested. No mechanical problems were found in the sewer lines, and all air quality tests came back normal.

A letter home to parents indicates that anyone who may have felt sick yesterday may be suffering from an intestinal virus that has been confirmed in the area. The assistant superintendent says that the school's ventilation system was cleaned this weekend as an extra precaution.
