Lori Cammon spends her mornings making candles in her kitchen, a hobby she began with her daughter, Lauryn Cammon Grant, just over a year ago.
"We're big candle burners, and we had a lot of products from [one company] that just contain[ed] too many toxic chemicals and fragrances," said Cammon. " I had a candle-making kit, and I said, 'Hey, Lauryn, let's make some candles just for us.' Then, we just kind of liked that process of it all, and we actually bought more materials [like] coconut, soy wax and other nontoxic ingredients and fragrances ... We sent some out to like family and friends, and it just kind of started from there."
What started off as a hobby soon turned into a full-time business, after Cammon told Cammon Grant she wanted to do a pop-up event with two weeks' notice.
"I said, 'Hey, I'm kind of thinking about this event,'" Cammon explained. "She says, 'Mom, no, this is too soon. How are we gonna do this?' ... Prior to that, I had no products, no website, nothing. So, I literally had to make everything from scratch."
Her daughter couldn't believe it but decided to jump onto the marketing side of the shop.
"I was thinking she was crazy," said Cammon Grant. "I'm like, 'We have absolutely nothing. So, how are we supposed to get this done? We both have full-time jobs. How are we supposed to pull this off in two weeks?' So, I immediately took out my laptop, and I was like, 'All right, you know what? We're going to do this,' and I just busted out the website in two weeks. We were able to launch the day before. It was a lot of long nights."
That pop-up was a success, leading to the official debut of Lola Craft Co., cleverly named after the two of them.
"My name is Lori, my daughter's name is Lauryn, and we just decided to combine the 'Lo' and the 'La' to make 'Lola,'" said Cammon.
Since then, the duo has seen their shop grow exponentially.
"When they smell the fragrances, they're always like, 'Oh my gosh, this smells so good,'" said Cammon. "They're [also] happy that [the candles have] clean ingredients...There's been plenty of customers [that say,] 'I'm going to tell my sister about this,' or 'My husband is really into candles, I'm going to tell him.'"
That word of mouth spread to other parts of the country outside of the New York City metro region, with Lola Craft Co. reaching some very large clients.
"We've had a lot of opportunities presented to us that we've taken action on," said Cammon. "We were contacted by a sports agency in Chicago, and they asked if we would be a participant in the NBA care packages for the rookies. That was one email. Two days later, we had another email asking us if we would participate in the same care packages, but for the wives and partners. So, of course, we said yes. [I] had no clue how I was going to do it, but I was like, 'You know what, we will figure it out.' So, 160 gift boxes were sent out over Labor Day weekend."
"We freaked out," Cammon Grant added. "We literally had a freakout, and it was such short notice as well...but then we were like, 'All right, let's get to business.'"
With all of the opportunities they have received within the past year, the mother-daughter duo is truly grateful. However, at the end of the day, the best part about this journey for each of them has been getting to run this shop with each other.
"It's definitely really fulfilling, and it's really fun," said Cammon Grant. "I feel like we're together literally all the time, [not only] because I live with her, but also [because] we're constantly talking about business. It's just really, really fun."
With tears in her eyes, Cammon agreed.
" I love it," she said. "I mean, [Cammon Grant] amazes me every day. The hard work. The dedication. We both have full-time jobs, so the fact that I said, 'I've signed up for this pop-up,' she could have said, 'OK,' and just left it at that. The fact that she just rolled up her sleeves and was like, 'OK ... let's rock and roll. Let's do this,' ... I appreciate that."
Lola Craft Co. also offers other fragrance products such as diffusers and linen mists. All of their products can be bought on their website or in person at multiple pop-up shops throughout the next month. Cammon and Cammon Grant will be making appearances at the following locations:
