Warwick police say a 7-month-old infant and a mother were attacked by a dog Wednesday afternoon on their porch.

Authorities say the dog was latched onto the mother’s neck when they arrived at the house in the area of Locust Street and Maple Avenue, and had her pinned to the floor, while a tiki torch that was knocked over during the attack set the porch on fire.

Police rushed the baby to the emergency room in their patrol car. The dog was fatally shot after police say they used a Taser to get it to release the mother’s neck and charged at an officer.

The mother is currently in serious condition. Authorities say the child was treated and released with minor injuries.

Authorities say she was attacked when she stopped the dog from biting the baby’s head and face.

The fire was quickly extinguished by the Warwick Fire Department, according to police.
