A Mount Vernon man who pleaded guilty to the fatal shooting of a teenager in 2023 has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, the Westchester County District Attorney's Office announced.
Tyrese Coghiel, 23, was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
The incident occurred in the courtyard of the Levister Towers apartment complex, where 14-year-old Zyaire Fernandez was fatally shot. Coghiel was originally charged with second-degree murder but took a plea deal, agreeing to the lesser charge of manslaughter in exchange for testifying that he received the gun used in the killing from his stepfather.
Coghiel's stepfather, 48-year-old Phillip Ferrel of Yonkers, was convicted of manslaughter in the same case and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
