Counseling was offered today for Mount Vernon students reeling after the tragic stabbing that took the life of their classmate Kayla Green.

Even though district schools are closed this week, a counseling center at the Denzel Washington School of the Arts on South 6th Ave. was open for students to get the guidance and support they’ll need to move forward after an unimaginable heavy last few days. 

Hundreds of people from the Mount Vernon community came out Monday evening for the friends and family of the 16-year-old Green — the school’s JV Cheer captain who was stabbed to death Friday while her best friend was left badly injured.

A vigil last night brought in crowds of pink and white to celebrate Kayla’s life.  Hundreds of balloons, filled the night sky as many release and try to turn to healing.

Also, the Mount Vernon Boys and Girls Club stepped off with a peaceful protest earlier in the evening to denounce violence. 

Kayla’s friends were seen holding signs, wearing shirts and chanting the phrase “Make the Resolution — Violence is not a solution”

Organizers say it’s important for teens to be heard as they strive to bring change — away from the violence that took a beloved young soul in their community. 

Between this and the vigil later that night, calls are growing stronger to not only lift the next generation and be more involved but also to veer from violence that is tearing the hearts of families.
