Mount Vernon parents upset after school tour
Not all of the parents given a tour of the newly renovated Columbus Elementary School Sunday were convinced the school is ready for classes.
Mount Vernon School Superintendent Welton Sawyer gave 200 parents a tour of the facilities and announced classes will start Monday at the school. Columbus Elementary and two other schools in the district had their openings delayed after being deemed unsafe for operation.
Despite the school official?s announcement, parents held a vote to decide whether or not to send the students to class on Monday. Many voted to keep their children out of school and to hold a protest during the first day of school.
PTA President Lillian Ramos said she's not satisfied with the construction progress and will keep her son from going to school until more work is completed.
Missing students will be marked absent, according to school officials.
