Mount Vernon police say officers responded to a shooting incident that occurred Thursday afternoon.

The shooting happened just after 4 p.m. at the intersection of First Avenue and Third Street, according to investigators.

Officers initially responded to multiple calls that reported gunshots in the area.

Detectives say the responding officers found two .9 millimeter shell casings.

They then received a call from the Mount Vernon Emergency Room about a gunshot victim.

The victim was stabilized at Mount Vernon Hospital and then transferred to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment.

It was not immediately clear as of Thursday night if the gunshot victim was related to the shooting incident.

People living and working in the area told News 12, they are fed up with the crime.

"You see the cops sitting right there, they can't even leave because if they leave, things get out of hand again," said Richard Powell who works in the area.

This shooting marks the third gun violence-related call for Mt. Vernon Police in just the last two weeks.

"I am angry, we are human beings. We need to look out for each other," Powell said.

Mount Vernon police ask anyone with any information on this latest shooting to call them at 914-665-2510.
