An organized group of Mount Vernon residents are accusing the city’s school board of misusing funds.
Save Mount Vernon, the group comprised of concerned residents, told News 12 the school board has paid more than $8 million to a company called Wellcore/Just Inspire! since 2015.
"We also understand that the company was hired to deliver services for $8.2 million,” said Save Mount Vernon co-founder Jesse Van Lewis. “It is rumored that there is a relationship between the superintendent, and the company in question."
Van Lewis added he believes that Wellcore/Just Inspire is owned by Superintendent Dr. Waveline Bennet Conroy's son.
The group says it is formerly requesting that the state Comptroller’s Office conduct a forensic audit of the school budget, which they’ve been asking the board to do for years.
News 12 reached out to the Mount Vernon City school district who said they have no comment.
