Mount Vernon's Senior Quilting Club celebrated Black History Month on Thursday at City Hall with a quilt exhibit and conversation with Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard.

Members of the group loaned the city about 50 quilts for the exhibit. They are being displayed on the walls of three floors at City Hall.

The club got a chance to tour the exhibit on Thursday and explain their artwork to others.

Many of the members made quilts that honored Black culture, including Pat Woodley. She told News 12 that quilts have the power to help preserve Black history.

"Well, it tells our history and our family history too. A lot of people sew their family history in the quilt, like the people's names and story, how old they are, things like that," Woodley said.

Those interested in visiting the exhibit can see the quilts on display through the first week of March.

A silent auction will be held at the end of the exhibit's run.
