The Metropolitan Transportation Authority recently announced that those iconic green and white reduced fare student MetroCards will be phased out and replaced with new cards that can be tapped on OMNY.

It’s all part of the MTA’s plan to speed up phasing out the MetroCard, which has been delayed due to the pandemic and other factors.

The MTA says New York City students will receive specific OMNY cards instead of MetroCards at the start of the upcoming school year.  The agency says OMNY pilots will also roll out for select paratransit and pre-tax commuter customers with a wider rollout for both groups expected by the end of 2024.

The MTA also says that all existing reduced fare MetroCard customers – that's 1.5 million people– will have an OMNY card mailed to them by 2024.
