New law aimed toward pedestrian safety adopted in Mount Kisco

News 12 spoke with Village/Town of Mount Kisco officials on Monday regarding a new law prohibiting bike and scooter riding on sidewalks for anyone 18 years of age and older.
The law, which passed 4-1 on Sept. 2, prohibits motorized and non-motorized bikes and scooters for those 18 and over from riding on sidewalks.
There is an exception for those who use electric personal assistive mobility devices.
"I had no problem with getting motorized scooters and bikes off but when it comes to the bikes on our sidewalks, we are an urban town," said Trustee Thomas G. Luzio, who voted in opposition. "We have many, many folks who commute by bicycle or who ride to their jobs."
However, Mount Kisco Mayor J. Michael Cindrich told News 12 that there has been conflict between bicyclists and pedestrians.
"Bicycles and pedestrians don't mix on the sidewalks," he said.
Mayor Cindrich added that it "is the first of many initiatives slated to address the demonstrated need for roadway and sidewalk safety improvements."
He added that while there are many challenges, three streets have been identified as possible bike lane locations.
