The NYPD released their latest collection of data regarding the city’s criminal activity.
According to the NYPD, major crimes in the city’s subway system have declined by over 19% this year. In February alone, they say 169 major crimes happened on the subway – still 9% less than the number in February 2022.
Officials credited these safer subways to the city’s investment into mass-transit security increases last October. In the first two months of 2023, the NYPD has conducted over 200,000 station inspections, an over 40% jump from last year.
"I wouldn't say that it's safe all of the time," said one commuter. "But I don't experience as much crime as it would have been."
