Newburgh officials
say authorities are still searching for answers in the death of a 7-year-old
boy who may have been starved and abused.
Official sources tell News 12 that an autopsy
report shows the boy was severely malnourished and that he may have died from
starvation, hours before his body was taken to Montefiore St. Luke's hospital
by a caregiver.
The source also says the child had leg injuries
that could have been caused by shackles. However, other investigators say the
injuries could have also been caused by tight socks or bed sores.
Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey says, "It has gotten on the radar of law enforcement. I
don't know all the details and protocols as to why, but I can tell you this,
they are definitely involved, it is an ongoing investigation."
The child's death is also being investigated by Child
Protective Services.
Authorities say there are other children who
still live in the same Williams Street apartment.
"The child died unnecessarily,"
says Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus. "In my opinion whatever they
want to charge you with, murder, homicide, neglect, should not have died."
