A new ingredient in sunscreen has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Although Bemotrizinol, or BEMT, will not be available until later this summer, some doctors have started to recommend the ingredient to patients.

Experts say it shields against deep-penetrating ultraviolet "A" rays. They say it's different than current sunscreens that only block radiation that leads to visible sunburn.

"The thing about this ingredient is it's been around in Europe since the year 2000, so we have a long history on it. We really feel that this is gonna save lives because people are going to use the sunscreen that they like, that feels good, smells good, and that's cosmetically elegant," says Dr. Deborah Sarnoff, president of the Skin Care Foundation.

Sarnoff says BEMT does not easily absorbed into the skin and protects people without leaving behind white streaks. It's also good for those with sensitive skin.
