News 12 went to Spring Valley Village Hall Thursday looking to question Mayor Alan Simon but did not get any answers.
The efforts come after several sources told News 12 about the mayor’s outburst and firing of treasurer Gregg Smith Wednesday afternoon.
News 12 has still not heard from the mayor's assistant. Two village board members declined to comment, but News 12 is looking to find out why he was fired and if Mayor Simon was allowed to remove him.
"These are always complicated situations. But according to public officers law there is a process in place but one that would have had to have been developed by the local village,” said longtime former area politician David Carlucci. "Public officers' law in New York state as home rule, gives villages the autonomy to set up policies as they wish. But when you fire or remove a public officer like a treasurer, there has to be an already made up policy."
A review of the village’s codes and laws did not come up with anything related to the appointment or dismissal of the village treasurer.
Another question is if this latest removal was an abuse of power.
Over the years, News 12 has reported on Mayor Simon’s outbursts and attempted firings.
In September, the mayor suspended the police chief and removed a school resource officer from Spring Valley High School.
