A dozen veterans are now living at the Rockland Homes for Heroes housing facility off Western Highway in Tappan.
It has 14 new apartments fully furnished and with appliances. It’s an affordable housing option for homeless and/or disabled veterans.
News 12 is told 13 units are occupied.
News 12 spoke with veterans on Tuesday who moved in a few months ago.
"I can't imagine going from this place. It just feels like home,” said Robin Rundblad, who served as a medic in the Army for 20 years.
"I really didn't know where I was going to go at the time. Then I met these guys and well, this is the nicest place I've ever had,” said Ray Myers an Army veteran who was a tractor-trailer mechanic for four years.
The project also includes a community room.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity they gave me,” said Benjo Simundac. The medically retired veteran lives there too and now works with the organization to help other vets find a place to stay. “They gave me a home. They gave me a place to stay."
The apartments are on the historic site of Camp Shanks, where more soldiers gathered before leaving to Europe, starting in 1943, during World War II.
Rockland Homes for Heroes also built eight units of housing on the Camp Shanks site in 2013.
