The pending shutdown of Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood, New Jersey, has taken away several community programs throughout Rockland County.
Pascack Valley Hospital is more than $80 million in debt and has gone bankrupt. The almost 300-bed facility and all of its off-campus offices will be officially shut down for good next Wednesday.
Elaine Peneno is the hospital's outreach services supervisor. She ran Pascack Valley's Wellness Center in Spring Valley for the past 12 years. The center?s doors were closed last month. That location ran several community programs throughout Rockland, including walking clubs, health screenings and CPR courses. All of those programs are no longer available to residents.
The shutdown in northern New Jersey means more people could be headed to hospitals in Rockland for medical care. Staff members at Nyack Hospital say they're ready to handle the increased capacity. Nyack Hospital officials say they has also taken on more general surgeons and they are looking for doctors from Pascack Valley Hospital who may want to join their staff.
