A local nonprofit organization that helps the needy says it has seen a 29 percent jump in people using its services in the past five years.
The organization, called Part of the Solution, or POTS, serves about 20,000 people a year and has been helping the poor since 1982.
Officials say the organization is struggling to meet the increasing demand for emergency food and other services as more local families find themselves in need.
Advocates say some Central Bronx neighborhoods like Tremont, parts of Belmont, Mott Haven and Crotona are in need of more resources to help residents living in poverty.
"We found there is a staggering level of poverty in those areas and we are trying out best to help them get out of that," says Christopher Bean, of POTS.
