Nonprofits express dismay over payroll tax
Gov. David Paterson visited Tarrytown Monday to try and address the concerns of charities and nonprofits struggling during the economic crisis.
The governor attended the annual Not-For-Profit Leadership Summit, which is put on by local nonprofits to help them find and share resources. Organizations who try to help those in need say they're finding it difficult to meet growing demands, and say the proposed payroll tax to bail out the MTA will only make things more difficult.
The nonprofit organizations in attendance at the summit say they should be exempt from the payroll tax as school districts are. The governor said he would consider the request.
"One of the reasons that the school districts were exempted is because we thought it would add to the sky-rocketing property taxes that people are enduring right now," Paterson says.
