North Castle Police are warning drivers that they are more likely to hit a deer between October and December.
The department offered some tips to avoid hitting them.
Tips include noting where you normally see deer on your typical routes. If you see one, there are probably more out so slow down and watch for them, especially between 6-9 p.m. when they're most active.
Use your high beams, when you can, to better see them.
Brake. Don't swerve. Swerving only puts you at risk of hitting another car or losing control of yours.
Police are also reminding people to wear their seat belts. New Castle police cite an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study that found most people killed in animal-vehicle crashes weren't wearing seatbelts.
