Classes in North Rockland will be starting up in a matter of weeks, but this fall they'll be without police officers on school grounds.
The district says it had been sharing the costs for the resource officers at two schools with the Town of Haverstraw and with Stony Point funding a third.
Now, the schools say they can no longer reimburse the towns for their share and the new 2-percent property tax cap statewide won't allow towns to come up with the money themselves.
Officials say the officers will not be laid off, but they will be reassigned to regular patrols.
North Rockland's not the only district affected by the economy. The Orangetown School District says it is planning to consolidate its two resource officer positions into one.
