The Bronx man who wounded six NYPD officers in a shootout and eluded authorities for 17 days in 1986 was killed Wednesday in prison.Larry Davis, 41, was incarcerated at Shawangunk Correctional Facility in upstate New York. Authorities say inmate Luis Rosado, 42, repeatedly stabbed Davis in the head, chest, arms, back and legs with a homemade shank during a recreational break.

Rosado is charged with first-degree murder. Officials believe a fight led to the murder.Davis shot six police officers who tried to arrest him at his sister's Fulton Avenue home in 1986 for the murders of five drug dealers. He then escaped through a window, setting of a 17-day nationwide manhunt involving hundreds of officers.He eventually surrendered after being tracked to a housing project where one of his sisters lived. Davis held a woman and her children hostage for hours before giving himself up. His ability to elude police gained him cult status among some.

At trial, Davis' attorney argued that police were trying to kill his client because he had information about corrupt cops.

A jury acquitted him of attempted murder and aggravated assault in the shootout, angering some. He was instead convicted on weapons charges and sentenced to five to 15 years in prison. At the time of his death, he was serving 25 years to life for a murder conviction in an unrelated case.

According to the Department of Correctional Services, Davis would have been eligible for parole in 2016. However, officials say he had an extensive disciplinary history in prison.
