The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating an incident in East New York.
It happened around 3 p.m. on Oct. 5 along New Lots Avenue near Vermont Street.
Police said a man walked up to a 35-year-old woman and made anti-LGBTQIA+ statements. They say he then grabbed a chair and hit her in the arm.
The attacker drove off in a white Jeep Compass.
Police said the victim suffered minor injuries but refused medical treatment on scene.
People who live in the neighborhood told News 12 that they feel safe walking in the area - just not alone.
“You’re walking in the street, and I don’t know that something like that is happening during the day,” said Hyacinth, of East New York, who only gave her first name. “It could happen to anyone. Now [that] you told me, I’m going to be on the lookout.”
Council Member Chris Banks, who represents the 42nd District, including East New York, released the following statement:
"Assaulting anyone; anywhere in New York City is absolutely unacceptable, and hate has no place in our communities. This kind of behavior is not warranted anywhere, and it is especially unwelcome in the 42nd Council District. We stand firmly with the victim and urge anyone with information to come forward to help bring the individual responsible to justice."
The attacker was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, red shorts and black sneakers.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
