An NYPD officer from Westchester was arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder in the shooting of a driver last month during an apparent road rage incident in New Jersey, Camden County prosecutors and Voorhees Township police announced today.

Authorities say 27-year-old Hieu Tran, of Yonkers, was charged on Thursday for shooting a 30-year-old man from Voorhees Township. Tran was also charged with second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Prosecutors say Voorhees Township police responded to a multivehicle crash on May 17 at 11:13 p.m. at the intersection of Route 73 and Cooper Road. They say officers found one of the drivers suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported by ambulance to Cooper University Hospital, where he remains in treatment.

During the investigation, prosecutors say detectives used surveillance video, cellphone records and ballistics evidence to identify Tran as the person responsible for shooting the unnamed victim during the apparent road rage incident. Prosecutors say ballistics evidence collected from the scene was ultimately linked to Tran’s department-issued firearm.

Tran was taken into custody on Thursday. He is being held in New York pending extradition to New Jersey.
