Police say an armed man who was fighting with his ex-girlfriend on Willis Avenue was shot early Monday by officers responding to the scene.
According to police, officers arrived at 461 Willis Ave. at about 2 a.m. and found 21-year-old Yancy Jimmian carrying a .40-caliber pistol and allegedly threatening to shoot the mother of his child. Authorities say Jimmian refused to drop his weapon, prompting police to fire 12 rounds.
Police say Jimmian was shot in the right hip during an exchange of gunfire. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Officers say the gun Jimmian had was unlicensed. Neighbors say the man had a violent past and his ex-girlfriend ran to a nearby Laundromat seeking help before police arrived. Jimmian was charged with attempted assault, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing.
The NYPD says it has launched a full investigation of the incident.
