A countywide health campaign kicked off in Rockland County in reaction to the rising obesity and related health problems in the region.
The Rockland County Health Department says more than 57 percent of adults in the county are overweight. They also reported an alarming trend of Type 2 diabetes and obesity in children. Now more than 60 stores are taking part in what is being called the Healthy Steps Campaign. The program emphasizes strategic placement of healthier foods in stores and the promotion of fruits and vegetables as opposed to packaged foods. Stores of all kinds are taking part in this program and have reported a very positive result thus far.
The Healthier Steps Campaign started in just a few communities in Rockland County two years ago. The program?s success in those communities encouraged health officials to expand it countywide.
