Danbury fire officials are investigating the cause of a two-alarm fire that forced 14 people from their home.

The fire chief says some firefighters suffered minor injuries.

"We started getting a ton of 911 calls around 7:30 p.m.," said Danbury Fire Chief Richard Thode.

When Danbury fire crews arrived at the three-story home on Locust Avenue Wednesday night, they saw flames and smoke coming from the building.

"Crews found a fire in the basement," said Thode.

Officials say the fire down the hill from Danbury Hospital was challenging with the frigid conditions, and made it slippery for firefighters to fight the blaze.

"It's a very old house, 100 years old and the fire just extended through all the walls and up into the attic and the guys really did a hard job to make sure everybody was out," said Thode.

Fire crews started inside the multiple apartment building but they had to attack the fire from the outside.

They say all 14 people in the building managed to get out before they arrived.

"Red Cross, Salvation Army came out. Luckily, one of the volunteer fire houses is just down the street so we were able to corral everybody that lived in the house and have them go there," said Thode.

It took crews almost five hours to control the fire.

Crews from Bethel, Brookfield, New Fairfield and Ridgefield also assisted.
