Officials in Hudson Valley say that a dam break is the cause for the major flooding that took place in Tuxedo during Hurricane Irene.

According to Town Supervisor Peter Dolan, an engineer determined that one hundred million gallons of water suddenly came pouring into the Ramapo River after the Echo Lake Dam broke.

Train tracks were washed out, and many homes were severely damaged after an 8-foot wave of floodwater led to a fuel spill.

Those who live in Tuxedo say they are not surprised by the findings, pointing out that the floodwater was worse than ever before.

The Echo Lake Dam is located on private property in the Arden section of Tuxedo. An official from the state's Department of Environmental Conservation is expected to inspect what is left of the dam in the next few weeks, but says that it has been classified as a low hazard.
