Online grocer breaks ground in the Bronx
After more than two years of planning, FreshDirect is breaking ground on its new headquarters at the Harlem River Yards.
The ceremony was greeted by protesters against the online grocer's move to the Bronx. For about three years, South Bronx Unite has been opposed to FreshDirect's relocation.
Bronx officials say the new Bronx headquarters will generate hundreds of new jobs. But, protesters say the promise of jobs isn't worth the pollution from FreshDirect's delivery trucks.
FreshDirect says it is committed to greener vehicles and estimates to have a fleet of electric vehicles within five years.
The groundbreaking today is the first phase of the online grocer's relocation. Officials say the headquarters will take about two years to complete.
The company says it is now hiring.
