Police in Orange County are investigating a politically charged racist rant after a Colombian-American was verbally attacked outside of a grocery store.
The outburst, which went viral, was aimed at a Cornwall mother Sunday as she headed into the Vails Gate ShopRite for her son's favorite cereal.
"He just started cursing at me. I had Max in the car, and he dropped to the floor and put his hands on his ears," she says.
The victim, "Ximena," is a longtime Orange County resident from Colombia. She says the incident was prompted by a parking dispute, during which the man allegedly yelled that she was a "Biden supporter."
"What does he know about me? He knows nothing. Just because he assumed I'm an immigrant and have an accent, he went with it," she says.
Ximena says she recorded the verbal attack to stand up for herself and that it's not the first time she's been called names in public because of her ethnicity.
"It's the climate. We have this hate between the two political parties, back and forth. It's sad. It's sad it comes down to this," she says.
And while the country seemingly remains divided, Ximena hopes her experience will serve as a lesson in humanity.
New Windsor police are investigating the incident. So far, no charges have been filed.
