yesterdayBloomfield College will get to keep its doors open through 2023, thanks to the help of another educational institution.
The college announced in October that it was having financial trouble and was looking for fellow institutions to partner with. Thirty schools from across the country responded.
Bloomfield College President Dr. Marcheta Evans wanted a partner whose mission aligned with that of her own school, and Montclair State University fit the bill.
Being a minority serving institution as well, they fit so well with the mission that we have here at Bloomfield College," says Evans.
Both Montclair State and Bloomfield College have a predominantly Black and Hispanic student body, and many of the students come from low-income communities. The prospect of the school closing would have meant a possible end to their scholastic careers.
Gov. Phil Murphy announced Wednesday a $5 million allocation in his state budget proposal that would help Bloomfield College and reduce the level of support needed from Montclair State. Montclair State President Dr. Johnathan Koppell says this is a win for New Jersey.
"You now have institutions, instead of competing, collaborating and saying let's find a solution, let's come up with something different," says Koppel.
