Firefighters were busy fighting two house fires in Rockland in as many days.
Darina Gutowski says her bulldog?s whining and barking woke her up at 2:30 a.m. Monday. She and another occupant got through the thick black smoke to escape the house fire just in time. Firefighters say in another 10 minutes, smoke would have overcome the residents and the dog.
Firefighters in Nanuet battled a fire on Merritt Drive that started in a bedroom Tuesday. Firefighters say when they pulled up to the house, smoke was billowing out of the windows. The residents luckily escaped without injuries. Orangetown fire inspectors say in both fires there were no working smoke detectors in the homes.
