Playing with Fire: Safety improvements made at Rockland schools
A follow-up of News 12's Playing With Fire investigation into fire safety compliance at Rockland County schools showed a dramatic increase in the number of facilities with valid inspection certificates compared to last year.
Through a Freedom of Information Law request, News 12 has learned that the total number of schools without certificates dropped to seven this year. In 2015, there were more than 60.
Most of the non-compliant schools in 2015 were private yeshivas. This year, only three of the seven schools were private yeshivas. However, the remaining four schools had religious associations.
State officials say authorities are cracking down on uninspected schools. All inspections must be completed by Dec. 1 and on file with the state Department of Education by Dec. 15.
