A Hudson Valley woman inspired by her 98-year-old grandmother to step out of her comfort zone and into the national spotlight took her turn on the "Wheel of Fortune" on Monday.
Pleasantville resident Jenn Sparano spent most of the pandemic caring for her late grandmother, and "Wheel of Fortune" bonded them nightly.
Mima, as she was affectionately known, encouraged Sparano to try out for the show she loved so much.
When the pandemic started, Sparano moved in with her grandma to care for her.
Some days were long, but the game show always brought them together, and made the tough times a bit easier.
"We slept next to each other, like in two twin beds. Every night we would watch ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and it was amazing," she says.
Sparano got pretty good at the game and Mima would tell her that she had to get onto the show.
Mima passed away last April. That's when Sparano decided she needed to get on the game show for her grandma.
And in her audition tape, she talked about how solving puzzles for 30 minutes a day created memories that will last a lifetime.
Sparano taped her episode last December wearing her grandma's favorite color, red, for good luck.
And on Monday night, dozens of friends and family gathered in Pleasantville to cheer her on.
Sparano was the big winner, taking home $17,000 and just missing the bonus round.
