Gorton High School in Yonkers was temporarily placed on lockdown Thursday morning after a fight broke out between two classmates.
"A student brought in a knife to the school and staged a targeted attack with another student," said Yonkers Public Schools Associate Superintendent Dr. Frank Hernandez.
The unnamed student who was attacked is in stable condition at a hospital, and a suspect is in custody.
Both student's names and ages, and what caused the fight has not been released yet.
The school was put under a brief lockdown following the altercation.
The school does have metal detectors that are used every day, but only on a portion of random kids.
Parents and students say it is not enough.
Ninth grader Ayleen Quino was in class when the attack occurred.
"It was kind of scary because you never know who's going to have a knife cause they do have metal detectors but they don't use them all the time," said Quino.
After the lockdown lifted, school instruction resumed for the remainder of the day.
"Just do the right thing," pleaded mother Teresa Johnson, who was waiting for her child to be released, "...and the right thing is not violence."
