Law enforcement officers conducted their annual "Operation Safe Stop" Thursday, issuing tickets to drivers who passed school buses.
According to a New York law, when the red bus lights are flashing, other motorists must stop. However, officials say cars pass stopped school buses at least 50,000 times a day across the state, placing children in danger.
"The kids have to cross the street," says Detective Lt. William Barbera, of the Rockland Sherriff's Department. "Sometimes they disregard [bus drivers' signals], they run across the street. The red lights are on purpose for cars to stop."
Passing a school bus carries a heavy fine that ranges from $300 to $1,000 and five points on a driver's license.
