Data from the ASPCA shows one of the top reasons pet owners give up their animals is because they become too expensive to take care of financially.
A new local vet center is hoping to easing that strain on pet owners.
“Its really heartbreaking that people have to give up their animals sometimes, not because they don't love them, but not everyone can afford to take care of a $10,000 surgery,” said Sam Murtagh, a pet parent and client of Hub Veterinary Group.
Prices for vet services jumped 10% in 2021 - the biggest spike in the last 20 years.
Thankfully for owners, Hub Veterinary Group in Port Chester is helping with the high cost of care for pets.
The local vet center is an urgent care, and regular vets office all in one. But that isn't the only thing that sets them apart.
“What we try to do at hub is, we never want an animal euthanized or not getting proper care due to cost,” said Hub’s founder Courtney Bellew.
According to Shelter Animals Count, 18% of pet owners have to dig into their savings to pay their vet bills and 5% have to take out loans.
Hub works with families to treat their pet at a cost that comfortable for them .
“For example, we had a cat come in from a local emergency specialty center and she had a very common infection for unspayed animals, and they were quoted almost $8,000 for the surgery,” Bellew explained.
The owners ended up turning to the hub and they performed that same procedure for less than half of that quote.
Hub is able to work with their clients by keeping their overhead low .
While they aren't available 24/7, they are open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
“My goal is always to try to keep animals and their families together. We want to make it so their family can afford their care and we send them home and they live happily ever after,” Bellew said.
