State lawmakers are revisiting legislation to punish drivers who don?t clean off their cars after snowstorms.
Flying ice is being blamed for as many as 15 car accidents and 50 reports of property damage since Sunday?s snowstorm. The most recent incident occurred Tuesday on Route 17 in Blooming Grove. A solid sheet of ice flew off a truck and shattered the windshield of a Warwick family?s car.
Although no one was injured, Assemblyman Mike Spano wants to prevent more serious accidents from happening.
?That ice can actually go clear through the windshield and kill or hurt someone,? said Spano at a news conference on Wednesday.
The legislation is six years in the making and, if passed, would require drivers to properly remove snow and ice off of their cars. Failure to do so could lead to fines of up to $850 for passenger cars and up to $1,250 for commercial vehicles. Current state law imposes much smaller fines.
