Rep. Mike Lawler is leading a delegation of Republican Congress members to Mar-a-Lago to meet with President-elect Donald Trump this weekend just over a week before he'll be sworn back into the White House.

The main topic is modifying or fully lifting the cap on state and local taxes.

Known as SALT, Trump implemented the policy in 2017. It capped how much filers can deduct what they paid to the state and local municipality in taxes from their federal taxes at $10,000.

Trump put the policy forward as part of his Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, but it effectively raised taxes for many voters, particularly in high-taxed states like New York. Trump has signaled a willingness to reverse the measure.

"We want to make sure that we get tax relief for hardworking New Yorkers and residents of the Hudson Valley, and so having the opportunity to sit down with the president-elect and discuss that is critically important," Lawler said.

Reps. Nicole Malliotakis, Andrew Garbarino and Nick LaLota said they'll be there too.

Speaking at a news conference, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said it was Republicans who implemented the policy and are now the ones trying to act like they're the ones fixing it.

"House Democrats will work with any serious-minded individuals to fully restore the state and local tax deduction to help working families and the middle class," Jeffries said.
