A prayer zone has been set up along the New York State Thruway for Hasidic Jews to congregate and say their late-day prayers in Rockland County.
The zone is on the top level of the rest area parking garage just past the northbound exit 15A in Sloatsburg. The spot used to be an ordinary parking ramp.
Before this safe zone was created, Jewish Orthodox men used to gather on the shoulder of the highway to say their late-day prayers.
Officials say Thursday is one of the busiest nights for the Hasidic men to pray on the Thruway, often stopping as they drive upstate to the Catskills for weekend vacations.
