State environmental officials have released new information in the investigation into dead birds found across Orange County.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says preliminary tests on dead crows found in the Town of Wallkill and dead geese found on Celery Avenue in the Pine Island area were positive for avian flu.
DEC says those samples are now being sent to a federal laboratory for confirmation, a process that could take several weeks. The update comes as state officials say avian flu cases have been increasing in wild birds across New York State, prompting continued monitoring and testing by wildlife agencies.
Earlier this month, News 12 reported on dozens of dead crows found behind the Wallkill Shopping Center along Schutt Road. Viewers later reported additional sightings of dead birds in the Pine Island area and Montgomery, including the geese found on a frozen section of the Wallkill River.
The DEC continues to urge the public not to touch sick or dead birds and to keep pets away from wildlife. Officials say large groups of deceased birds should be reported to the state.
