A proposed charter amendment in Yonkers could pave the way for extended term limits for the mayor and the city council.

If approved by the council, the measure would allow elected city officials to serve for four four-year terms instead of the current two terms that voters ratified in 1994.

If there's one person who approves of the extension, it is Mayor Mike Spano, who says he wants to run for a fourth term because there's' still work to be done on behalf of the people of Yonkers.

The Democrat mayor has served the city since 2012. Many voters in Yonkers say he's been doing a good job.

Now up for city council's consideration, there is the charter amendment that would allow Spano, Yonkers City council members and the council president to serve for four four-year terms. That's two terms longer than voters ratified in 1994 and one more term that was authorized by a city charter amendment that the council approved in 2018.

A town hall meeting on the matter is scheduled for Monday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the auditorium at the Riverfront Library.
