A Queens man has been arrested in connection with a deadly hit-and-run in Haverstraw Tuesday.
Haverstraw police say Sugundo Landi-Lucer, 43, was driving on Route 9W when he fatally struck a pedestrian.
Landi-Lucer is accused of hitting 72-year-old Juan Alberto Germosen, of Haverstraw. Police say Germosen was crossing Route 9W around 4:45 a.m. Tuesday when he was struck.
"He was always up the street, I would see him at the laundromat," says Rochelle Stansbur, Germosen's friend. "He was a good person. He didn't deserve that."
Police say license plate readers and surveillance video led them to Landi-Lucer's home.
Officials at the Green Hills home for adults where Germosen lived for more than a decade tell News 12 they extend their condolences to his friends, family and loved ones."
Rockland County Executive Ed Day also offered his condolences. In a statement he says, "It is my hope that the family of Juan Germosen can rest more easily tonight knowing the person allegedly responsible for his death is now behind bars."
Landi-Lucer is charged with criminally negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. The judge says Landi-Lucer will be released as long as he hands over his passport.
"It's just hard because while we are sitting here planning a funeral he's getting to go home and have a Thanksgiving meal with his family so it's just hard, it's hard, I'm sorry."
Landi-Lucer is due back in court Dec. 15.
